In 1973, the Society of Naval Architects of Singapore (SONAS) was founded and later co-opted the Marine Engineers in 1981 to become today’s Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, Singapore (SNAMES). After five decades furthering the interests of maritime professionals, SNAMES celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2024.
The celebrations began with the production of the 50th Anniversary Commemorative Book, “Delivering 50 Years of Maritime Excellence”, documenting SNAMES’ rich history, achievements and contributions to Singapore’s maritime industry—honouring the Society’s legacy and inspiring continued excellence for the next 50 years and beyond.

Historical information was gathered from SNAMES Annual Journals housed at the National Library Board (NLB), websites, internal records, and 17 interviews with SNAMES pioneers whose stories were never previously documented.

The celebrations culminated in a Gala Dinner graced by Mr Baey Yam Keng, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment & Ministry of Transport.
